Dudley Market | Venice, CA

March 04, 2017 by Veronica Kablan in Los Angeles Restaurants

It's safe to say that Los Angeles is now officially a "foodie town." We're no longer living in the culinary shadow of Northern California; we've got our own loud, colorful identity and it's finally being reflected in our restaurants, as well. From pop-up restaurants to fine dining establishments, chefs across the city are pulling out all the stops, showing off not just our region's incredible produce but their own capacity to innovate and entertain with food.

Dudley Market is a perfect example of the changing landscape in Los Angeles' food culture. It's a little food oasis, hiding in what feels like a back alley just steps from Venice Beach. It's the kind of place you'd happen upon after taking a wrong turn while looking for someplace else. But once you'd soaked in the welcoming exterior, the pretty gold logo etched on the massive windows, and the tempting menu by the door, it's also the type of place that would charm you into forgetting wherever it was you were supposed to go. And then, you'd taste the food, and you'd start to wonder if it was here that you were meant to be all along.

In the rustic, light-drenched space that was once a convenience store, Chef Wesley Barden is cooking up delicious, inventive cuisine that makes the most out of the bounty of produce he finds at local farmers markets. By day, Dudley Market feels welcoming and relaxed, serving home-baked pastries, comforting breakfast and lunch dishes, and grab-and-go snacks and drinks to locals as they wander off the beach. By night, it becomes a romantic, candlelit bistro, alive with conversation and laughter as diners savor elegant cuisine and thoughtfully selected wines.

IMG_0967.JPG
IMG_0965.JPG

The breakfast menu during the week is short but sweet; its six items somehow manage to cover all the bases. It would be hard to top the Smoked Salmon dish as a perfect, contained breakfast (unless, of course, you added an egg on the side... which I did). The homemade bagel is perfect, and the caraway kefir provides a light and tangy alternative to a basic cream cheese. The vegetable accompaniments make the dish feel special, providing freshness and sharp contrasts in both flavor and texture. But the star of the dish is, of course, the gorgeous and vibrant house-smoked salmon, delicately flavorful and tender.

IMG_0993.JPG
IMG_0978.JPG
IMG_0988.JPG

During weekend brunch, the menu doubles in size, adding stick-to-your-ribs breakfast dishes and classic lunch fare, as well as bottomless mimosas. The Shrimp & Grits dish certainly falls under the stick-to-your-ribs category; it's hearty and comforting, but somehow doesn't feel heavy. The rustic cheese grits have a texture almost like buckwheat or oatmeal, and are thick, creamy, and oh-so-satisfying. On top, spicy shrimp, runny fried eggs, and a sweet onion marmalade create a harmonious flavor profile that elevates a simple country dish into something distinctive and memorable.

IMG_0982.JPG
IMG_0973.JPG
IMG_0970.JPG

The Farro Bowl was an unexpected surprise, combining a kitchen sink's worth of different textures and flavors into something surprisingly harmonious. Perhaps the most unusual component is the sieved egg, which is impossibly fluffy and light and melts into a salty creaminess when it hits the tongue. The farro is as nutty and firm as you would hope it to be, tossed in a light vinaigrette that offers just a hint acidity, and the radish slices add a satisfying crunch to each bite. There are also chunks of tangy citrus, earthy roasted mushrooms, and flecks of fragrant rosemary. What brings this all together is the luscious smear of whipped goat's cheese on the side of the bowl; it's lemony and bright and yet still savory, and it's so light and fluffy that it's almost cloud-like. We both agreed that we'd be satisfied with a bowl of this cheese alone, or maybe with a nice slice of baguette. It's divine.

IMG_0974.JPG
IMG_0986.JPG

And because no good brunch goes without a bit of decadence, there are the Seany Cakes. This should probably be called simply Seany Cake, what with there being only a singular enormous cake, but the Seany Cakes are all about challenging your expectations. In fact, nothing about this dish is what you'd expect; the cake is thick and crispy on the outside, incredibly moist and steaming in the center, and sports a robust, yeasted flavor that barely approaches sweetness. On top, deliciously tart, syrupy blackberries and a mound of soft, sweet whipped cream that melts the moment it makes contact with the steaming hot cake. This is exactly the kind of dish that Sundays were made for.

As the Los Angeles food culture continues to explode, deciding where to brunch next can be overwhelming - but perhaps we needn't look much farther than our own backyard. Hidden gems like Dudley Market are out there, offering something special and unique (and downright delicious) to their communities. Taking the time to discover them can be an adventure in itself - and hey, if at the end of the adventure there are some bottomless mimosas, we certainly won't complain.

Haute Cakes Caffe | Newport Beach, CA

January 28, 2017 by Veronica Kablan in Travel

When it comes to brunch, Los Angeles is bursting at the seams with options. It feels like there are new restaurants opening every week, each offering food more delicious than the ones that came before. Honestly, it's difficult to keep up. So why would you ever venture outside of county lines to have your Sunday mid-morning feast? Because, friends, the O.C. knows how to brunch, too. A quick Yelp search will reveal that cities like Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, and Irvine are absolutely packed with delicious brunch options, some of which even give L.A. a run for its money with their creative, scrumptious fare. My husband and I find ourselves in Orange County quite a bit visiting family, and have managed to sample some really delicious and satisfying brunches. One recent such trip took us to the lovely Haute Cakes Caffe in Huntington Beach.

HauteCakesEntry
HauteCakesFrontDoor

Tucked away inside a rather nondescript shopping center you'll find a sweet little garden dining area, as well as an inevitable line spilling out the café doors. Each weekend, OC residents flock to Haute Cakes, lining up for baked goods, egg sandwiches and scrambles, and inarguably delicious pancakes. Luckily, the line moves fast, and there's plenty of seating available both inside and out. This operation is a well-oiled one - which comes as no surprise when you realize that this restaurant is coming into their 27th year of business.

Both the interior and the patio are absolutely charming, it's clear that the owners strive to keep the place looking fresh and modern and that everything here is done with a lot of love (maybe it's the adorable hearts hiding everywhere that tipped me off?). Outside, locals linger over their treats with their families and pets - dogs are more than welcome on the lovely garden patio. Inside, the pastry case is packed with beautiful sweets from homemade pop tarts to shiny croissants and tempting cupcakes. There's a rumor going around that the cinnamon rolls are unmissable, but as they typically sell out of these within an hour or two of opening, I can neither confirm nor deny. The coffee is taken quite seriously, too; they're brewing up delicious Stumptown coffee in both drip and espresso form.

HauteCakes7

Our table sampled plates both sweet and savory, since every good bruncher knows that variety is the spice of life. First, an almond croissant that was flaky, buttery, and light - just exactly what a croissant should be.

HauteCakes6

Then, the "Hello & Good Morning" Sandwich: two fried eggs sandwiched between a buttery brioche bun, with crispy bacon, avocado, tomato, greens, sharp cheddar, and onion-jalapeño jam, served with a side of oven roasted potatoes. This was a hearty, satisfying meal with a wonderful kick from the jam.

HauteCakes0

Next, the All American Scramble, a perfect choice for those looking for a more classic breakfast. With crispy smoked bacon, avocado and tomato, toast, jam and oven-roasted potatoes, this was another really filling breakfast choice. Normally, this dish is also served with cheddar, but ours was without - my poor husband who ordered it sadly is allergic to dairy products (awful, I know).

HauteCakes1

Of course, I am a sucker for some avocado toast, so when it pops up on a menu I'm rarely able to resist. Haute Cake's version comes with smashed avocado, heirloom tomatoes, rosemary sea salt and soft herbs on sourdough toast. I opted to have my eggs sunny side up, because I do love a runny yolk. On the side, some seasonal fruit, which to my delight was a heaping pile of fresh, tart berries. Now that is the way to do a side of fruit (none of this honeydew melon nonsense, thankyouverymuch).

HauteCakes2

And because I couldn't in good conscience come to Haute Cakes Caffe and walk away without having tried some 'cakes, we ordered a side of the Orange Ricotta Haute Cakes. The menu warns that these take a bit longer than usual to cook, but ours were out only moments after the rest of our food arrived. Topped with juicy berries and served with a side of maple syrup, these pancakes actually melt in your mouth. Creamy, soft, and perfectly cooked, these were definitely a winner.

To you Angelenos: next time you have the occasion to venture south of our lovely city, consider doing so on a weekend morning so you can indulge in some Orange County brunch as well! There are many delicious treats to be found, including some really wonderful pancakes.

Claudine Artisan Kitchen and Bakeshop | Encino, CA

November 26, 2016 by Veronica Kablan in Los Angeles Restaurants

It's the weekend, you're hungry for brunch, and you're in Encino: what do you do?

A few years ago, that question may have been answered with either a promise of a really long line (I still love you, The Nook, I just really hate lines), defaulting to a chain restaurant (gasp, not IHOP!), or a trek over the hill. Luckily, a shift in the culinary landscape is taking place, and it's worked its way over to Encino.

Founded by locals Lea Newton and Anthony Jacquet, Claudine is an effort to offer excellent food that reflects the diverse community that they hail from. The founders aim to tell a story with their food, and a part of that effort is to ensure that their ingredients have a story, too - which they accomplish by sourcing seasonal and sustainable produce from local suppliers. Claudine offers up three meals a day, including that rarest of birds, weekday breakfast, as well as family picnic boxes to go. They've got a killer beverage selection that includes boozy brunch options, craft beer and wine on tap, and locally roasted Verve coffee.

Like so many places in the Valley, Claudine is tucked in a strip mall on a busy street. There's plenty of parking below grounds in their parking garage, with a surprising number of spots reserved for restaurant patrons only - complete with little signs that build anticipation for your meal ("you're one step closer to sweets and eats!"). The restaurant space is charming and bright, with a large open kitchen and bakery that allows you to watch the masters at work as they create gorgeous cakes and pastries. The back wall is adorned with a colorful cake stand collection, and the counters are covered in plates of tempting baked goods from cinnamon rolls and homemade pop tarts to cakes, cookies, and scones.

The brunch menu is substantial and diverse, offering twists on the classes like malted milk pancakes or the Breakfast "Naan-za," as well as healthy choices like Lea's Lightened Quiche and Mexican-inspired dishes like Chilaquiles. We struggled to choose as we waited in the short line to order, especially with all those gorgeous pastries staring us in the face, begging us to skip real food and binge on sweets.

The malted milk pancakes are a generous size, offered with a side of bacon, salted honey butter, and maple syrup, and topped with cinnamon-berry compote to offer some extra sweetness. Fluffy and creamy, these are a must-try for any pancake fan.

Chilaquiles at Claudine Artisan Kitchen & Bakeshop, Encino, CA

The Chilaquiles were definitely a winner, especially if you're a fan of an especially tangy salsa verde like I am. The chips were soaked in sauce (quite generously so) but still a bit crisp, and the egg on top was perfectly cooked. I especially enjoyed the addition of the stewed chicken, and the cotija cheese and crema drizzled on top were a perfect finishing touch.

Since avocado toast is all the rage of 2016, we were not surprised to find it on the menu here as well. Claudine's "Avocado Toast, Nikki's Way" did not disappoint, and in fact was a piquant and unique take on the dish. The crunchy baguette was topped with Serrano Ham, a perfectly fried egg, cayenne pepper, and a flavorful chimichurri sauce that really helped to set this dish apart.

We also enjoyed the breakfast tacos, a hearty and satisfying dish with scrambled eggs, turkey chorizo, black beans, and avocado. The tacos were tasty, but the potato wedges they were served with really stole the show - they were fantastic: super crispy on the outside and soft and warm on the inside. You should definitely try these.

And of course, because no self-respecting brunch would leave out dessert, we tried a few of those tempting sweets from the bakeshop as well. The chocolate pot de creme lived up to its good looks; it was creamy, rich, and flavorful without being overly sweet.

Christmas season hadn't yet set in when we visited Claudine, so many autumnal treats were still available to us, including a deliciously moist and dense pumpkin cake donut that paired perfectly with their robust Verve coffee.

We even took a box of goodies home with us to give to friends, including those squirrel sugar cookies that were absolutely too cute to resist. By around two in the afternoon when we left, we realized we weren't the only ones who couldn't resist their treats - many of the pretty trays of baked goods were nearly empty!

Between the delicious food, great coffee, comfortable environment, and friendly atmosphere, this was certainly some of the best brunch we've had in the Valley. The entire experience was pleasant, with plenty of seating for everyone, inside and out, with enough space for large groups and families with kids. We love how comfortable and community-centered Claudine feels; even after almost two hours of relaxing and enjoying each others' company, we didn't feel rushed to leave or give up our table. And the icing on the proverbial (artisanal) cake? Not having to wait in line for hours to get a table on a Sunday morning.

Bottega Louie | Downtown Los Angeles, CA

November 05, 2016 by Veronica Kablan in Los Angeles Restaurants

Entering Bottega Louie in the Brockman Building on 7th and Grand feels a little bit like stepping through time and space. As you leave the busy Downtown LA street, the white and grey marble floors, bright white walls, golden accents, and shining pastry cases beckon you into a classic French patisserie. It’s kind of like you’ve just taken a trip to a Paris of yesteryear, but without the jetlag (or Owen Wilson for that matter).

Bottega Louie is a multi-dimensional operation: the front is a wonderland of treats; an upscale bakery and gourmet food shop, with fresh to-go meal offerings in a refrigerated case and fresh bread and pastries galore. And obviously, the veritable rainbow of handcrafted macarons, which taste even better than they look.

Past the bakery is the bar, perfectly in theme with the Parisian café feel. Here they mix up a charming list of classic cocktails, including one of my favorites, the French 75. Nothing quite says ‘fancy European brunch’ like a French 75.

Just beyond the bar is the enormous restaurant. The space is gleaming: between the tall ceilings, polished marble floors, and the floor-to-ceiling windows, it’s flooded with an airy lightness. It’s also usually packed. Since opening in 2009, Bottega Louie has quickly become a Los Angeles institution. And, with its incredible number of Yelp reviews and its high standing on TripAdvisor, some would even call it a tourist attraction.

If you can focus amidst the high volume of the crowd and the constant buzz of waitstaff circling throughout the room, you’ll find that the menu offers a wide variety at brunch. The restaurant is actually Italian, but at brunch they serve a range of quintessential breakfast favorites accompanied by their classic pizzas, salads, and small plates.

Luckily, we had a few extra ladies come along for weekend brunch, so we could order a nice variety of brunch treats. Ok, if you know us, you already know that we always order a variety, no matter how many people are there - but having a few more makes it feel a bit less sinful.

We started with the beignets, because every good brunch has a starter course. They were light, sweet, and a perfect treat to whet the appetite.

The spread: (clockwise, from top left): Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, Croque Madame, Eggs Benedict, Farmers Market Breakfast

The spread: (clockwise, from top left): Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, Croque Madame, Eggs Benedict, Farmers Market Breakfast

For main courses, we ordered the lovely Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, the perfectly decadent Croque Madame, the all-time classic Eggs Benedict, and the hearty Farmers Market Breakfast.

Pancakes

Lemon Ricotta Pancakes have become a modern breakfast staple; they seem to appear on almost as many LA brunch menus as avocado toast lately. And don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining - who would pass up a moist, fluffy, cheese-filled pancake? Bottega Louie's version did not disappoint, with just the right amount of lemony tang, creamy density, and simple sweetness. The blueberries were a nice touch, too.

Croque Madame, Bottega Louie, Downtown Los Angeles, CA

The Croque Madame felt like a nostalgic nod to a meal at a Parisian café. Topped with a perfectly cooked egg and oozing with gooey cheese, it was definitely a crowd pleaser.

Eggs Benedict, Bottega Louie, Downtown Los Angeles, CA

Brunch and Eggs Benedict are essentially synonymous, so luckily Bottega Louie had us covered there. Theirs is a solid version of this classic dish; the crispy Canadian bacon and expertly poached eggs were smothered with a rich, velvety hollandaise sauce.

Farmers Market Breakfast, Bottega Louie, Downtown Los Angeles, CA

To me, a perfect brunch really tiptoes the line between breakfast and brunch, incorporating elements of each. The Farmers Market Breakfast did that perfectly, offering up a hearty bowl of veggies and potatoes, and topping it off with some poached eggs. The feta cheese added a tangy sharpness that brought it all together.

To end our brunch-venture, we of course couldn't help but stop by the bakery for some macarons. With so many tempting flavors, narrowing it down to five was actually difficult - but don't worry, you can always get a box of 13, 28, or 45 if you're having trouble choosing.

Each macaron we tasted was truly exceptional. The crispness of the cookie paired with the rich, luscious, and flavorful fillings created a heavenly dessert experience! And did I mention the gorgeous packaging? It's like they were wrapped up for a princess. Honestly, these treats alone made it worth the trip to DTLA.

With so much variety, it felt like we only sampled a small slice of Bottega Louie's offerings. If only we'd had more room to taste all those other beautiful desserts... Or sample the beautiful breads, tempting chocolates, or beautifully packaged jams. I guess we have an excuse to come back!

At the end of the day, what makes this place so memorable is its charm. It oozes luxury and specialness, with each tiny, thoughtful detail adding up to a perfectly elegant experience. It's no wonder it's become a tourist destination!
